Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Osteopath?

An Osteopath is a health care practitioner who helps patients manage a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. They assess where the pain or problem is coming from and factors that may be contributing to the pain; this may include, but not limited to joint movement, alignment and tight muscles.

You may consider this as a holistic approach, looking at not just the area of pain, but possible other areas of the body that may affect the main complaint; Osteopaths also consider external reasons that may be related to a patients presentation.

An Osteopath will then apply various techniques such as soft tissue massage, stretches or manipulations to assist with alignment and movement. Osteopaths are not only limited to these techniques. They may also provide their patients with postural advice and prescribe personalised exercises.

What should I expect during my first visit?

An initial session at Campbelltown Osteopathy will consist of filling in a history form when you first come in. The practitioner will then go through why you have come in, followed by discussing your past medical history.

After the review of your case, a physical examination will  be conducted to help form a diagnosis and find contributing factors.

Treatment will follow an examination and discussion of findings. Treatment is individual and will vary from patient to patient, techniques may consist of a variation of Osteopathic techniques, such as, but not limited to massage, stretches and joint manipulation.

Advice and further exercises may be prescribed to assist with further management.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

A referral is not required to see an Osteopath unless you have been referred under the Enhanced Primary Health Care Scheme, DVA or workcover.

What should I bring with me?

Please bring any letters from practitioners if they have referred you to us as well as any imaging scans (e.g. x-rays, MRI or CT scans) that are relevant to your condition.

Will I receive a rebate from my health fund?

If you have private health insurance with extras, you may be able to receive a rebate, although each health cover policy will differ from patient to patient and it is best to contact your health fund if you are unsure.

We have a Hicaps machine and you will be able to claim on the spot.

What you do recommend I wear?

Gowns and shorts are available if required. This allows for an effective assessment of your condition, although you only will be requested to do what you are comfortable with. Otherwise comfortable flexible clothing is helpful.

Can I book in my baby?

Osteopaths may treat babies and children, although please call first to discuss the case prior to booking to allow us to assess if it is a condition we may be able to help with.
